You have the opportunity to raise your prophetic voice against the privatization of Minnesota's prison system, which would create a financial incentive to perpetuate the misery of Minnesotans of color who are targeted by the current "War on Drugs."Corrections Corporation of America, whose business is the prison system itself, is proposing to Governor Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature that substantial money be spent on reopening a prison, Prairie Correctional Facility. A meeting of legislators is being held on September 25, 2015 to consider this proposal.   Given Minnesota's problem with racially-biased law enforcement and mass incarceration, more prison cells are not what the state should be spending money on. Instead, our legislative priority should be on spending that helps people, and specifically prisoners, reenter the community and the economy.
Please join ISAIAH faith leaders from 8:30 am to 9:30 am on September 25 in Room 10 of the State Office Building on the State Capital mall (
100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd,St. Paul) where we will call for a halt to the creation of a private prison system that profits off the misery of communities of color who are unfairly targeted by our current "War on Drugs." We will call instead for a system of incarceration that loves and respects the dignity of prisoners as Christ would.  To that end we will call for programs that would help prisoners reenter the community and move us toward the larger goal of reforming our economy of exclusion to be inclusive. Job creation programs, drug treatment, and prisoner education programs are examples of programs that would serve that goal.

Now is the time to speak out, before we head farther down the self-destructive path of privatizing our already-entrenched prison industrial complex.  Join ISAIAH at this event and urge others in your network to attend as well. Stopping the proposed expansion of prison facilities is a small first step towards reforming the present racist and unjust criminal justice system. Come with your prayers, your ISAIAH buttons / signs and your clear, prophetic voices of protest.

To RSVP for the event or for any questions, contact Larry Moloney at LarryND1@aol.com.

NATIONAL VOLTER REGISTRATION DAY!

Seal of the City of Minneapolis
Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services

Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services is hosting an event on Sept. 22, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. celebrating the legacy of the Voting Rights Act on National Voter Registration Day.

National Voter Registration Day is a huge national effort to get as many people to register as possible. The goal is not to advocate on behalf of a candidate or party, but to make sure that people have access to voting. 2015 also marks the 50thanniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Join us at this special event to celebrate the struggle to protect and promote the right to vote and to recognize the continuing importance of voter registration. Guest speakers will include Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon and former Minneapolis Mayor and Congressman Don Fraser, a member of Minnesota’s congressional delegation in 1965 who voted for the VRA’s enactment. The event will also feature a special performance by a joint gospel choir joined by Minnesota music legend Robert Robinson, and the unveiling of an exhibit chronicling the history of the Voting Rights Act and elections in Minnesota.

Following the formal program, there will be opportunities to learn about the voter education resources we can provide to interested organizations and groups. These include registration toolkits, voting equipment demonstrations, absentee voting information, and tools to engage residents and stay in touch ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Can you join us? All are welcome, and we’d love for you to share information about this event and National Voter Registration Day with your friends and connections as well. There is a Facebook event you can join, and it is public so you can add friends to invite as well: https://www.facebook.com/events/1700280136850012/?ref=98&action_history=null

Attached to this message is a flyer sharing more information about the event and National Voter Registration Day.

Dear GFMBC Family,

Across the county, more black men are incarcerated now in 2015 than were enslaved in 1850. ISAIAH has been working to stop the sin of mass incarceration which disparately impacts people of color. Although Minnesota has the nation’s second lowest prison population per capita, we have the second highest growth in the rate of incarceration.

Our state prison system is overfull and Swift County is working to re-open a private prison facility owned by Corrections Corporations of America (CCA). Goff Public (a public and government relations firm based in St. Paul) has been engaged by Swift County to “promote the availability of the CCA facility with the DOC, the Legislature, and the public." [1]

Minnesota can do better; Goff Public can do better; we can do better than trying to solve the prison over-population problem with more prisons. ISAIAH members are working on a number of fronts to heal racial injustice and to urge our elected leaders to invest in reforms that keep people out of prison. Below are two important actions we invite you to take!

Attend a Prayer Vigil at the Capitol
The Prison Population Taskforce will meet this Friday, September 25 in the Staff Office Building to discuss solutions to the prison over population problem. Join us at 8:30 am as we hold a prayer vigil outside their meeting room to keep witness throughout their discussion. Click here to RSVP and learn more!

Sign the petition to Goff Public
Goff Public, an agent of Swift County, was hired to promote the CCA facility. CCA is the largest and oldest private prison owner and operator in the U.S. and they have extracted nearly $1 billion in profits over the past 5 years. As reported recently, the company’s prisons have been dogged by allegations of maltreatment, neglect, and abuse.

Click here to sign the petition to Goff Public to say: As people of faith, we completely reject the notion that any entity in our state should profit from the incarceration and detention of human beings!

Minnesota has no place for a company like CCA or any company that thrives off the pain of incarceration and human misery. The very notion is abhorrent to our values and is a deep and profound violation of the sanctity of human life.

Sign the petition to Goff Public. http://action.groundswell-mvmt.org/petitions/tell-goff-public-stop-promoting-for-profit-prisonsi

These two actions are critical as state leaders consider expanding our prison system. Minnesota must say a resounding, “NO!”. NO to CCA. NO to prison expansion of any kind. NO to opening any door to a corporation that would profit off the misery of our people.

Sincerely,
Phyllis Hill
Catalina Morales
