ISAIAH News: Acting on our Faith
Create a Better World

Building Our Prophetic Resistance

Join us in our prophetic resistance as we respond faithfully to the threats facing our neighbors, our communities, and our democracy. We will pray, lament and repent together in the moment we are facing. We will build our vision for life and abundance in our communities, and build our strength and conviction toward the prophetic resistance we will need in the coming years. And, we will ACT. We will call on our Governor, mayors and national representatives to resist with us and to declare Sanctuary and safe, healthy communities for all people in Minnesota.  Register:

MN Clergy and Faith Leaders Confront Medica Health for Putting Dollars Before People

While Minnesota House and Senate Republicans are moving forward with a proposed massive corporate bailout for health insurance companies who have created a crisis for Minnesota families with bloated premiums, 25 Minnesota clergy held an action at Medica, one of the worst insurance actors. Faith leaders expressed outrage over Medica’s attempts to force Minnesotans to pay for the costs of their morally questionable business decisions. Clergy with ISAIAH are calling for a public option so that private insurance companies are required to compete with a system genuinely focused on people’s well-being…  Continue

At a press conference held in early December it was announced that ISAIAH congregations have created a network of Sanctuary congregations in Minnesota to provide a sacred space of refuge for immigrants that are in immediate danger of deportation. Through the eyes of faith, we recognize that everyone is a blessing. We are all children of God and deserve being treated with dignity. You can read more about our efforts here.

Healthcare National Day of Action

Leaders in Congress are seeking to repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacement. More than 20 million Americans and 380,000 Minnesotans will lose their health insurance if the ACA is repealed. If this happens, countless Minnesota families will be financially ruined and people will die. As people of faith we will resist this assault on our health and our families. On December 20, ISAIAH leaders visited the offices of Congressman Erik Paulsen and Congressman Tom Emmer to express concerns over replacing the ACA.Read our press release here.

ISAIAH presents Immigration 101: a 6-part video series

This was presented during our weekly Teach-Ins on preparation for Sanctuary. This is a 6-part video series on immigration to the US, why we have it, why some hate it, why some love it and how we can move forward. View here.

Sentencing Guidelines Commission

Many ISAIAH faith leaders testified in late December against a drug reform proposal that will harm individuals addicted to drugs and disproportionately affect the black and brown community. Although 22 of 25 people testified on the side of justice, the Commission rejected the more humane, common sense application of the drug sentencing reform law. We will continue organizing to build more power, explore better ways to resist and disrupt the status quo of the criminal justice system and public policy-making bodies that are dominated by those who are disconnected from the painful, racist and counter-productive reality of the impact of their decisions.

At the Capitol

At the Minnesota State Capitol, ISAIAH leaders provided testimony about a bill that would amend REAL ID so that no one can authorize driver licenses for the undocumented. Two bills were also introduced requiring all local law enforcement to cooperate with federal ICE officials in detaining, rendering Sanctuary Cities toothless. Leaders visited legislators and were part of several strategy sessions with other organizations and legislators who are working to prevent the passage of these anti-immigrant bills.
Besides the three anti-immigrant bills introduced this week at the Legislature, a bill that makes seeping, complex changes to healthcare sailed through seven committees without deliberation or understanding by legislators. And, legislators say they will resurrect last year’s effort to reopen and run a for-profit, privately owned prison.
How can we respond to the overwhelming number of attacks on programs and policies that create healthier communities? Join us on January 28 at our Building Our Prophetic Resistance gathering and engage with other people of faith who are trying to figure it out!  Click here to register.

We surpassed our Year-end Fundraising Goal and Raised $52,000. Thank you!

Thanks to the generous outpouring of support in November and December, ISAIAH leaders will be able to more powerfully move forward in creating the beloved community – a community that recognizes the dignity of each person, cares for the least of us, and provides everyone with the opportunity to thrive.
